Introduction
In March, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Skövde, Sweden, for a week-long cybersecurity project. This experience was a perfect blend of technical challenges and cultural enrichment, preparing me for my future career in IT security.
The Project
The main goal was to identify and mitigate cybersecurity vulnerabilities in various systems. This hands-on project simulated real-world cybersecurity scenarios, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical, controlled environment.
Experiences During the Project
From the outset, the project demanded a high level of collaboration and problem-solving. Working alongside international peers, I tackled complex cybersecurity challenges, learning to navigate and neutralize potential threats effectively. One key activity involved defending our systems while attempting to breach others, which sharpened both my defensive and offensive cybersecurity skills.

Beyond the technical work, my time in Skövde was enriched by cultural immersion. I embraced local customs, such as the cherished Swedish tradition of ‘fika’—a coffee break that emphasizes relaxation and socializing. This cultural exchange fostered a sense of camaraderie and highlighted the importance of work-life balance even in high-stakes environments.
Reflection
The cybersecurity project in Skövde was more than just a technical exercise; it was a profound learning experience that underscored the value of interdisciplinary skills. I honed my technical abilities, particularly in identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities, while also enhancing my teamwork and strategic planning. The cultural aspects of the trip, from navigating language barriers to understanding different work ethics, broadened my perspectives and underscored the importance of global collaboration in IT.
Conclusion
My adventure in Skövde was an invaluable chapter in my professional development. I returned not only with enhanced technical skills but also with a stronger professional network and a deeper appreciation for the collaborative spirit that defines the global tech community. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to lifelong learning and highlighted the critical role of cultural competence in the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity.
